At Back in Balance Wellness Center, our chiropractors in Bangor specialize in everything you need to stay well—including chiropractic care, massage therapy, physical therapy, nutrition, and even acupuncture. Now that warmer weather is finally here, you may be planning on spending some time gardening this spring and summer. Before you get outside, however, there are some posture and preventative care tips worth keeping in mind to avoid injury!
Tips for Proper Posture and Avoiding Injuries in the Garden
Spending hours hunched over flower beds and tilling your garden can wreak havoc on your spine, which is why we have some tips and techniques you can follow to reduce your risk of injury. For starters, before you head out for an afternoon of gardening, take some time to stretch and loosen up your muscles, just as you would before working out at the gym. Specifically, doing a few sets of standing or sitting toe-touches will help loosen up and lengthen the spine, reducing your risk of strain injuries.
Also be sure to watch your posture while working in your garden. Rather than hunching over on your knees for extended periods of time, consider using a gardening stool or bringing a lawn chair to sit in while you work, if possible. And as easy as it may be to lose track of time while enjoying the outdoors, don't forget to take short breaks where you get up, walk around, and stretch out. Set periodic timers on your phone or another device if you're worried about forgetting. And of course, don't forget to stay properly hydrated by having a bottle of cold water nearby at all times.
