Back in Balance Wellness Center provides Acupuncture for the Bangor, Brewer, Orono and Hampden Areas.

For years, acupuncture has been revered as an effective traditional treatment for pain relief. It is based on the belief that diseases are caused by a disruption in the energy flow around the human body. The treatment is done by inserting thin needles at specific points on the body by an acupuncturist in order to provide pain relief to specific regions. These points of the body are known as meridians or acupuncture points that are stimulated to help restore the natural flow of energy. Our Back in Balance Wellness Center team serves the areas of Bangor, Brewer, Orono and Hampden. We are dedicated to helping you live a happier, healthier life.

History of Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been recorded as the traditional Chinese healing method dating back to 2,500 years ago. This form of treatment is believed to have begun in the Stone Age where sharpened stone knives known as ‘Bian stones’ were used to puncture and drain abscesses. Much of what is known today about acupuncture has been referenced from the text ‘Classic of Internal Medicine of the Yellow Emperor’. The ancient text gave the world a clear and candid insight into the ancient forms of Chinese holistic healing.

What Happens During Acupuncture?

Our acupuncturist will first conduct an examination inspecting your tongue, and pulse to determine whether your energy is unbalanced or blocked. Body parts such as the tongue can easily be checked by our trained team of acupuncturists for medical issues just by observing color, shape, and texture. During treatment, our acupuncturist will first locate acupuncture points throughout your body where the needles will be placed. The placement is a painless process, and most patients will only feel the pressure as the needle is inserted. Depending on your energy levels, some needles may be placed deeper. A treatment session will last for 60 or 90 minutes. The number of sessions needed depends on your medical condition or response to the treatment.

Methods Used in Acupuncture

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a technique that involves the application of heat to an acupuncture point.  This process involves burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb that facilitates healing by stimulating stagnant body areas. The herb is held close to the acupuncture point strengthening and stimulating blood and energy flow.

Cupping

A method of acupuncture treatments that involves placement of specialized cups on the skin to create suction. The cups are of different materials such as glass, bamboo, brass, ceramic or metal.

Electro-Acupuncture

Acupuncture needles are attached to an electric device that sends low-frequency electrical impulses to the body. The electronic devices are then inserted along acupuncture points throughout the body resulting in a continuous and even stimulation.

At Back in Balance Wellness Center, our staff will cater to a variety of treatment plans for health conditions such as migraines, back pain, acid reflux and stress. Depending on the needs of your specific ailment, our acupuncturist might also suggest herbal remedies to enhance your treatment plan.
